Soothing the savage beast

Sometimes when the kids are cranky, I pull out a box of instruments and put on some loud music. I'm not talking Raffi or Sesame Street, either; when things get stressful, I put on music I like. My theory is that if I'm relaxed, the kids will relax. It usually works like a charm! Another upside: I bet I'm the only family child care provider in all of central Mass whose kids love Steely Dan, The Police, and k.d. lang. Sweet!

That's awesome. When my mom did childcare part time while she was going to grad school, she'd put on whatever music she liked too and there was one song, actually a song the choir sang in church, that she had a recording of to practice from or something... anyway, the little boy with Down's Syndrome that she took care of, Josh, LOVED this one particular song. He would ask and ask for it and he'd dance and clap and laugh when it came on. It was the cutest thing ever. We'd listen to it ten times in a row because he loved it so much.

I hate Raffi, Barney, and all the others like that. I think children do well with good music, not innane stupid music.

My second grade teacher favored disco and to this day, I know more words to more disco tunes than I really should.

The Small Friends are partial to the Beatles.
